Robert A. Mattson, Board Member

Rob Mattson recently retired after a 35-year career working for two of Florida’s Water Management Districts: as Biologist with the Suwannee River Water Management District (1988-2005) and Sr. Environmental Scientist with the St. Johns River Water Management District (2005-2022). Before that he worked for a small environmental consulting firm in the Tampa Bay area (1983-1988). Rob has a B.A. in Biology and M.S. in Zoology from the University of South Florida. He was certified as an Environmental Professional by the Academy of Board Certified Environmental Professionals and as a Certified Senior Ecologist by the Ecological Society of America. Most of his career at St. Johns and some of his time at Suwannee was spent working on springs. He supervised submerged vegetation mapping/monitoring and macroinvertebrate surveys on the Ichetucknee River, developed a Pollutant Load Reduction Goal for nitrogen and phosphorus for the Wekiva River and springs, began and oversaw annual submerged aquatic vegetation surveys on 7 spring-run stream systems in the St. Johns River basin, and has published many technical reports and papers and made scientific presentations on Florida springs. In 2022, Rob was honored by the Florida Lake Management Society with the Marjorie Carr Award, their highest award given for a lifetime of achievement in the management and protection of Florida’s aquatic resources.
